The issue that I plan to address is male standards. I plan to approach this by picking apart the slam poem “Ten responses to the phrase man up.” I personally would like the address this issue because of the huge role gender standards play in our society. In class while watching the clip of men being oppressed by society, I began to do some research to find that men’s suicide rate is three times that of women’s. Men are looked down upon for not conforming, yet women are praised. Shouldn’t they be able to be free to express themselves? Shouldn’t they be able to have meaningful emotional relationships? Shouldn’t they be able to be weak sometimes? Shouldn’t they be able to not like whatever they want? Why is there here is such harsh judgement on men not “maning up”? It has a huge effect on not only men’s lives, and society as a whole.
