We are surrounded by technology and
as a society I think it’s safe to say we rely on it a lot whether it’s for our
job, communication, or entertainment. With that comes a lot of visual media and
advertisements. Companies promoting a product or people promoting a cause are
smart about their advertisements. They have to keep things in context for example,
you don’t see Tampax commercials trying to motivate men to buy their products
for personal use. You see women with smiles on their faces doing exercise with
lots of flowers in the background because that’s who they are trying to connect
with to buy their products. The things that repel me are the things that don’t apply
to me or entertain me. Things that are
exciting and humorous are the ones that attract me. When a commercial comes on and
says, “Are you suffering from frequent heart burn…” I change the channel or completely
ignore it but when I’m older I’m sure I’ll be writing down the number to buy
the product. Another element that turns me off is visual media that is sad. Although
I believe this strategy is very effective. Every time I’m watching TV and the advertisement
to donate to animal shelters for abused animals comes on I automatically change
the channel when I hear, “In the arms of the angle”. I believe these commercials
are very effective and once I have a steady source of income I’d love to donate
but for now that commercial just really dampers my mood. On the other side of
things the kind of images that pique my interest are exciting and funny ones or
realistic ones that really catch my attention. GoPro commercial are my
favorite. I’m watching people jump out of airplanes, swimming with sharks,
doing back flips on snowmobiles and doing all this other cool stuff all while I’m
sitting around being lazy. These commercials motivated me to buy a GoPro camera
and go out and be a hero. The daily bombardment of visual media helps me find things
that I might be interested in that I never would’ve known about, like a new
movie or product but If it doesn’t interest me I tend to ignore it.
