The theme in the Great Dictator that strikes most relevant to me is the growth in technology. What makes this particular theme special is that it has always been a problem as long as humans have existed and it has done everything but slow down. A few years after Charlie Chaplin wrote this speech, the book 1984 came out which predicts a very technology heavy government in the near future. Now that that book is 30 years out of date, it seems very relevant to both Charlie Chaplin and us as humans today. A present day issue is that demonstrates this theme is whether or not the NSA should be allowed to track it's citizens movements and trace their calls through everyday technology. The idea behind this is that it is supposed to be a way to prevent terrorism however it lowers the amount of privacy the average citizen has in the country.
