This speech ties into the theme of equality and tolerance of
the fellow man. The present day issue that comes to mind when I heard this speech
was racial discrimination. Throughout the speech Chaplin was talking about how
we are all a part of this world and in the conclusion he says “Let us fight to
free the world - to do away with national barriers - to do away with greed,
with hate and intolerance.” I think that if Chaplin was alive today he would
say basically the same thing and argue that yes there has been some improvements
but there is still a lot that needs to be changed.
I feel that racial discrimination is a very brood
topic but in recent years I feel that there has been a lot more focused on people
of Latin descent. Within the last week even it has been a major topic of discussion
sparked by the fact that a Mexican directed movie won so many awards at the Oscars.
Many influential people have spoken out about this topic.
