An overwhelming theme I saw in the discussion in class today was blind obedience. In the comic strip, the "aliens" were taking over a civilization because they cared more about their jobs than the extinction of a civilization. I relate this to colonization or war, because groups of people will kill thousands of people for the sake of oil or resources, and not even think twice about it. I think this is caused by blind obedience. The Handlebars song showed the story of a man who got carried away, and uses his power for evil rather than good. He became blind to what he was doing and he lost sight of the good in himself. In the V for Vendetta clip, V told the people that they are to blame for what was happening, because they were blindly obedient. This blind obedience was caused from fear of war, starvation, and death.
I would like to relate this blind obedience to the Hunger Games movies. The society portrayed in the Hunger Games is one that is blindly obedient to the Capitol. The Capitol uses scare tactics to get the people to obey them, and in turn the civilians give up young people to be killed in the games each year. In the Hunger Games, however, it takes a small group of civilians and a leader to stand up to the capital and end the killing of innocent children and young adults.
I believe currently that many Americans are being blindly obedient to the government. Presidents have been misusing their power for many years now, and Americans have done nothing about it. World War 2 was the last war to be approved by congress in American History. That means that the United States involvement in the Korean War, Vietnam War, and the War on Terror have all been executed using "executive action" from the president. Even though these actions are unconstitutional, Americans still fight in the wars and they still follow blindly by what the president says.
