Today in class we looked at gender rolls in society. Going all the way back to days that the Odyssey was written. Penelope was left at home to “housewife” jobs, while Odysseus was out sailing the sea and making a name for himself. Secondly, in the video clip discussing roles and stereotypes of men and women, this idea was very present. It transitioned from the roles each gender plays, to the idea behind why, and how men treat women. Following this stand up, we watched a clip that directed its attention to the hardships present in the males “emotionless” role in society. Lastly, we analyzed a standup on “the friend zone” and the idea behind it.
The relationships and ideas present in the texts analyzed today got me thinking, and actually researching. Men in society today are typically forced to carry out a double role in order to be considered a “nice guy”, and don’t find it beneficial to fall in that category due to the lack of “reward”. So why would men want to do that? Statically speaking, 1 in 5 women have been sexually assaulted, and the suicide rate for men is three times that of women. Are men in society today under too much pressure that they are pushed into hardships causing them to act in drastic ways? What gives them the ideas to act out in such measures?
In the movie Just Go With it, Adam Sandler plays a character that is consistently struggling with trying to please the women in the movie along with the male double standard. In this movie, his character goes through multiple changes as he tries to overcome being a “player”, “jerk”, “self-centered” individual who grows to realize that he was best friends with his dream girl all along. He manages to get her out of the so called “friend zone" and realize his feelings for his assistant.
